Boubar Nedlands

Boubar drinks

I went to dinner at Boubar Cafe in Nedlands with my friend Erlin one night. It's a very close cafe to the University of Western Australia, and some uni students are working part-time at Boubar. Our server was a very friendly Agriculture student who was in his last semester at uni.

Boubar served great coffee and brunch, but I never went there for dinner. I was excited to see the dinner menu especially since I saw gravalax in it. Even though Boubar is a small cafe, the atmosphere was inviting for dinner.

They have indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating will be perfect for afternoon drinks and night feed with a group of friends. On Wednesday to Saturday, Boubar offers Happy Hour from 4:30-5:30 pm.

The dinner menu at Boubar is divided into small and larger share plates. Erlin and I ordered some drinks, scallops and octopus from the small share plates, braised lamb shoulder and piquillo peppers and shellfish bisque from larger share plates.

The baked scallops with peanut Nahm Jim and baby coriander was a good start. I liked the presentation using the shell too. The grilled octopus was a bit too hard to cut and very chewy, we both felt that it could be cooked better. It came with Jerusalem artichoke, fennel and lemon. Just like the scallop, it was presented very well too.

The piquillo peppers were stuffed with prawn and salted barramundi in shellfish bisque. It was a stellar dish, and we really enjoyed it. The braised lamb shoulder was very tender. It was served with pickled onions, dukkah and labneh. We felt that this dish would benefit from more pickled onions on the side.

Erlin and I had a great time at Boubar. It was cozy, and we will definitely visit again next time. The staff friendly and helpful in explaining each dish to us. Next year it will be the tenth year for Boubar to operate. When a cafe can survive for that long, we knew that they're doing something right ;-).
