Sediment at Fringe World Festival
At my shorter stature, I would have preferred front row seats for the full, immersive experience. Instead, I had to settle for a row behind, with taller patrons occupying front row seats.
The original scores for Sediment were created using items around the stage, such as a typewriter, sand, glass bottles, and antique instruments. Those things helped to create the feeling of the past and the immersive juxtaposition between lively excitement and despair displayed onstage, a real compliment to the atmosphere during the show. I sensed frustration and optimism, love and incompetency at the same time.
MY INTERPRETATION
For me, Sediment is about a relationship of two people. Just like any other relationship, it starts with slowly breaking down the wall and welcoming the other person into your life.
Welcoming another person means that things can get more complicated than usual. Your attention and time will be divided, some sacrifices need to be made, and you might lose yourself in the relationship. IF you're not careful, then there might be a power play where you end up putting the other person on a pedestal, but not the other way around.
Sediment goes into the heart of the matter, such as who you really are when you're faced with difficult decisions. Are you the type of person that takes everything away in a relationship, a control freak or the one that loves too much but ended up hurting the most?
When you watch Sediment, I encourage you to look beneath the surface of skills and to come up with your interpretation of the storyline. I believe that at the end of it, there are no second-class thoughts when it comes to art.
"Sediment is Company 2's most innovative theatrical venture, reimagined especially for Perth’s Fringe Festival 2018. This is the final time Australian audiences will witness Company 2 in action before they embark on a tour to South America for one of the biggest theatre festivals in the world."
