Sauma, Northbridge

Sauma is located close to the WA Museum CPP, probably about 5 minutes walking distance. The restaurant is really easy to find as it occupied the corner block of William and James St. We’ve been wanting to try Sauma for quite some time especially since we walked passed the restaurant many times during our weekends.

I am captivated by the rows of hanging windowsills on the ceiling that Sauma has as well as a bit of an industrial look at the back of the restaurant where you can see pipes and brick wall mixed well with the modern interior. The blue and white hand painted ceiling lights were put together really well with the windowsill and brings out more colour to the inside area of the restaurant.

Sauma has some communal tables which will be perfect a large groups who want to share their food around but for those who don’t want to share their table, there are also some smaller tables fit for 2-4 people.

Sassy Lassi

Sauma has a short list of cocktails but each has its own interesting ingredient in it such as Curry Mary which came with the house curry powder or the Sassy Lassi which was suggested by the waitress. We ordered a serving of Sassy Lassi which was a fun twist to the original mango lassi. Sauma’s version was mixed with Kraken Rum and topped with pistachio shavings.

When the waitress asked whether we had any questions, Hubby asked her for suggestions regarding the hot and spicy dishes. Our friendly waitress suggested that we try the Bang Bang Chicken but it wasn’t as spicy as what we thought it would be. Although having said that, we understood that the level of spiciness might be turned down to accommodate all patrons.

The next suggestion was the Aunty G’s Chicken Curry. With ingredients like cardamom, caramelised onions and tomatoes, the curry really mixed well for the dipping sauce of our garlic naan. The chicken breast was well cooked although a bit dry and there was plenty of meat in one serving although I’d probably choose chicken thigh.

We also tried the Goan Surf and Turf which combined the slow cooked beef with chargrilled tiger prawns. Both mixed with chili paste and sautéed capsicum which made the dish smelled really delicious. As for the taste, we both enjoyed the combination of the juicy tender beef and freshness that comes from lemon.

We enjoyed our time at Sauma and it was quite a relaxing dinner for us. We really like the interior at Sauma, the space between each table and the friendliness of the staff. We’ll definitely go back to try other dishes on the menu and the quirky cocktail.
