Night Noodle Markets 2017
We went to the opening of the WAToday Good Food Month: Night Noodle Markets (NNM) presented by Citi at Elizabeth Quay last night with a few friends and we still think that it's one of the best markets around! This year's NNM is a cash-less event and every stall is equipped with an eftpos machine. Not only that, there are more chairs and tables available at the venue compared to last year's NNM.
This year they have the Menulog dining area called 'At-Home-Zone' where diners can secure their table and order their food from the comfort of their seat. They have oversized inflatable bean bags and you don't have to queue for your food because the Menulog team will do all the hard work for you (yay!).
Gelato Messina
Gelato Messina was the stall that everyone (incl. the media) raved about. Gelato Messina made sure to give Perth residents the best selling items from the Sydney and Melbourne Night Noodle Markets. My personal favourite out of the three selections was the Great Balls of Fryer! It was deep fried spiced banana gelato on a bed of mango pudding, drizzled with passion fruit caramel!
All of my 3 friends preferred the Pavin' It Large which was the combination of lychee meringue, coconut & pandan sorbet, kaya (pandan custard), raspberry marshmallow and yuzu puree. Pavin' It Large had a savoury and sour flavour to it. The Thai and Stop Me was the least favourite of all since we couldn't really taste the Thai milk tea flavour. Thai and Stop Me was a combination of Thai milk tea gelato, milk choc raspberry fudge, chocolate caramel dip, rolled in roasted cocoa nibs.
SpanThai
SpanThai serves Spanish as well as Thai food and they have a lot of snacks on offer at their stall. Their pad thai was definitely on point, we loved the flavour as well as the noodle that didn't stick together. I ordered a plate of mango sticky rice with coconut sauce. This dish came with plenty of fresh mangoes, more than what I expected.
Other than pad thai and mango sticky rice, SpanThai also has saffron chicken and chorizo paella available from the menu. All of their dishes can be ordered at the Menulog lounge.
Hoy Pinoy
Just like last year's event, two of my friends lined up right away for Hoy Pinoy before the queue got very long. This year they occupy the opposite side of Elizabeth Quay and are located next to the wall of lanterns. We went with 2 chicken and 2 pork skewers but later on went back for more juicy chicken skewers. This year Hoy Pinoy also sells Liempo (Asian style bacon) on top of rice with their special sweet glaze. I have a sense that this year they will be one of the crowd favourites again.
Waffleland
On my way to Menulog's lounge I passed by the Waffleland stall. Their waffles look so pretty with different type of toppings from maple syrup, lychee caramel and nutella. All waffles will be served fresh, warm and fluffy. The easy choice will be Bangkok Night which came with melted warm Nutella and strawberries.
Other than that Waffleland will have 4 other different flavours on offer: Black Panda which came with maple syrup and sprinkles of black sesame, Lucky Fortune that served with lychee, caramel syrup and sprinkles of icing sugar, Dancing Dragon with melted chocolate and icing sugar, and Shanghai Sunrise which was a combination of fresh baked waffle stick with mango, shaved coconut, ice cream, Violet Crumble bits, wafer sticks, drizzled with maple syrup and dusted with icing sugar. Each waffle costs $10 with the exception of Shanghai Sunrise ($18).
Adelphi Grill
I was craving for something meaty when Martin suggested that I try the spicy fiery fillet slider from Adelphi Grill's stall. I walked there alone and was greeted by the friendly staff at Adelphi Grill. I saw some sliders already available in the heated display case so I expected they would just take one out to give to me. I didn't expect the staff to say that they would make a new one for me. They did and it was such a great slider with a good spicy kick.
The fiery fillet was rubbed with the Adelphi’s secret blend of fiery spices and it is one of the signature dishes at Adelphi Grill. Another dish that's available at the stall is the Sticky Whiskey Pulled Pork.
Bao Stop
This year Bao Stop is back with their Bao Trifecta and Peking Duck Fries. The latter was definitely everyone's favourite last year. I had quite a lot of Peking Duck Fries last night and really enjoyed it. It's a dish that can easily be shared between friends or families. The Bao Trifecta consists of pork belly bao with hoisin sauce, fried chicken bao with a spicy chilli-mayo sauce and a peking duck bao with green vegetables.
Taiwan Noodle House
Taiwan Noodle House came from the same people who brought together Bao Stop and there's only one menu item that they offer. The $18 Taiwanese hand pulled noodles topped with 5 spice beef broth, 16 hour cooked brisket, sui yuk crispy roast pork belly, char siu roast pork and steamed Chinese vegetables. We got ourselves a bowl because we never tried it before and we shared it between 4 people. The noodles were really well-cooked, al-dente and springy. The broth itself was really flavourful and the whole thing will really fill you up too (if you don't share it ;-)).
Blackstar Pastry
Blackstar Pastry's Watermelon Cake has a loyal following in each state and Perthians definitely love this fruity cake too. It was really good to be able to taste this cake without the need of flying over to Sydney. This cake was a combination of almond dacquoise, whipped cream, watermelon, strawberries, Iranian pistachios and rose petals. If you're full but still have a room for dessert at NNM, then this one is definitely a must have cake.
Eat No Evil
Eat No Evil will dish out some great fusion tacos to the NNM. We tried the raw Japanese salmon tostadas with watermelon and sesame paste. It was really refreshing and the watermelon brought in the sweet flavour to the savoury paste. All of their dishes are gluten free and there is a vegan taco option, the Thai Pumpkin Felafel.
Sambal Kampung
Hubby was eyeing Sambal Kampung for a while and he finally decided to get the roti channai and curry chicken. Once he brought the dish to the group we all had a try of the fluffy roti channai. The roti was fluffy, crispy and soft at the same time. It wasn't gooey at all. All of us dipped it into the curry and wow, the curry tasted really good with enough heat to it. $6 will get you one roti channai or you can get two for $11.
Twistto
Twist potato is a famous street snack even in Korea where it originated from. I was so happy to see a Twistto stall there. They're located right next to the Teppanyaki Noodles stall. The potato was hand cut and each twistto is about 35 cm long.
There are 7 flavours to choose from: salt & vinegar, nutty satay reviver, natural sea salt, mild chilli, chicken salt, pepper delight and cheese cheers. Cheese cheers is my favourite, a combination of 5 different hand picked blend of cheese powders.
Low Key Chow House x Dainty Dowagers
Low Key Chow House is back to Night Noodle Markets and this year they will dish out spicy green chicken curry as well as D-I-Y lettuce cups with Saigon's pork (nemnuong) patties and colourful condiments. Last year I had a really good adobo chicken and bang bang beef curry from them. I'll have to go back to try the pork patties!
